As the highly rated and beloved HBO Series “Game of Thrones” comes to an end this season, many of the show’s fans are somewhat disappointed by the recent announcement that the airing of the next season of the show might not happen at the same time next year and might be delayed till the end of the year. While waiting for the show fans might find a consolation on Netflix’s similar show “Marcopolo.”
Marcopolo, unlike Game of Thrones and other highly rated TV Series, is based on a true story. It is the story of an explorer and traveler from Venice who crossed paths with Kublai Khan, a descendant of the great Genghis Khan. Kublai ruled the mongols in the 1200s, and there was tussle after tussle for power between different clans or the throne of Gengis the “Khan of Khans.”
Kublai also sought to expand his empire, forcing him to clash often with the neighboring empires. In the second season there was particular showdown between he and the members of the Song Dynasty that ruled South China. Throughout the series, the members of the Song Dynasty tried to preserve their lineage and succession as the rulers of China. It eventually fell to the Mongols, but not without resistance from the very impressive Chinese warriors. The Mongol Empire was however not without its own issues with regards to tales of succession.
Like any other TV series, there are stories of love connections made and broken, betrayals, epic fight scenes, and tragedy. Macopolo is not an exception and definitely earns our recommendation.
Amidst the epic battles on horseback and the sounds of the heavy artillery of canons, the show manages to highlight the individual skills of certain characters. One of the most impressive characters was the the Shaolin monk that resided Khan’s temple. He was impressive in skills as he was in wisdom and philosophy. Originally and adversary of the king, he ended up serving the king and helping him achieve many of his victories.
The Blind Monk nicknamed “The Hundred Eyes” was captured the audience every time he put on a show and made martial arts beautiful!
There are rumors that the show has been cancelled and not renewed for a third seaseon due to poor ratings. If this is true, it will be a great loss to the fans of shows like Game of Thrones, Banshee, True Blood etc. We think the show definitely deserves a few more seasons, not just because of its entertainment value, but also because it has a strong historical significance.
